Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as "V."

Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

From the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix films) comes this sci-fi actioner set in a post-war England where Germany won the war. A young woman allies with a masked revolutionary who battles the authorities of this now-fascist state.

Having fallen under totalitarian rule in the aftermath of mysterious biological attacks, V for Vendetta??s England bears more than a passing resemblance to America??s current state of cushy supermarket brand fascism. Led by Adam Sutler, played menacingly by John Hurt, the right-wing Norsefire Party use the biological attacks to sow the seed of fear in Britain??s political imagination, much as the Nazis used the Reichstag Arson as their call to arms. Once Sutler establishes a political foothold, he and his party consolidate a totalitarian regime that specializes in tactics such as roving wiretaps, renditions and torture.

The scene is utterly hopeless until an unnamed character disguised as Guy Fawkes (Hugo Weaving) emerges to save Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) from government agents intent on raping her. The man behind Guy Fawkes?? eternal grin is an anarchist and a poet, a dissident tortured and horribly disfigured by experiments undertaken in the earliest days of Sutler??s chancellery. His imprisonment and torture banished fear from him, leaving him singularly capable of exacting revenge on those who tormented him, who eradicated his former identity and created V. His revenge coincides with November 5th, Guy Fawkes Day, but there are no coincidences, at least not in his mind.

Delayed by last summer??s London bombings, V for Vendetta illustrates the importance of upholding Enlightenment ideals and infuses them with an anarchist sensibility. Like dystopian classics 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, V for Vendetta makes a pressing case for vigilance and dissent at times when dissident voices are deemed unpatriotic, or worse, seditious or treasonous, and puts it all in an entertaining package, rife with violence, poetry and glorious spectacle. The circumstances surrounding the film??s production, notably its delay, make those virtues even clearer.
