Drunken Monkey (Zui-4 Hou-2) is a movie in which Shaw Brothers invested HK$15 Million and collaborates with Beijing Jin-Gu Film Workshop and China Film Corporation. Yesterday, Wong Fei Hong's (Huang Fei Hong) third generation disciple, Liu Chia Liang, became the centre of attraction during Drunken Monkey's press conference in Shanghai Song-Jiang Shooting Base that signalled the start of its production.

Liu Chia Liang received martial arts training, at the age of 9, from his father, the second generation disciple of Wong Fei Hong. He started his career as an extra, having starred in tens of Wong Fei Hong series, walked the path of orthodox real martial arts movies, and was the first martial arts choreographer in Hong Kong to become a director. Liu Chia Liang who is respectfully called Master Liu by the people, did a barehanded form to the amazement of the attendees of the press conference. He brought along with him the Liu Clan, wearing grey sports T-shirts emblazoned with the red Chinese character, Liu. Besides his disciples, his brothers, as well as partners, Gordon Liu, Liu Chia Yung, his nephew, Liu Yong Jian (Lau Wing Kin, Liu Chia Yung's son), who is a star with TVB, Wu Jing and the beautiful Malaysian-born Taiwan lady, Shannon Yao Yao, who is a dancer, were present.

As with most kungfu movies, Drunken Monkey has a simple plot. Wu Jing and Liu Yong Jian fall for Yao Yao and thus springs forth a convoluted love story, coupled with pugilistic grudges and family feuds. Liu Chia Liang said that his movies are without special effects, are based on real kungfu and interspersed with humour. Since becoming the director in 1975, he has been recognised as one who makes authentic kungfu movies featuring orthodox Shaolin Fist.

Wu Jing said that the Hong Kong and Taiwanese producers and actors are particularly efficient in speed. Their sense of commercialism are stronger than Mainland China. Wu Jing said that he would be developing his career in both Mainland and overseas film industries and that overseas distributions of Drunken Monkey have already been finalised. What's so special about Drunken Monkey is its lack of special effects. It depends solely on authentic kungfu and the production believes that it will introduce Wu Jing to the West.

Drunken Monkey will not be relying on CGIs. It will showcase authentic kungfu and full-contact sparrings. Besides Wu Jing, it will also be featuring Liu Chia Liang's (Lau Kar Leung) brothers, Liu Chia Yung (Lau Kar Wing) and Gordon Liu Chia Hui (Lau Kar Fei), senior martial arts stars - Qi Guan-Jun (Chi Kuan Chun) and Zhang Zhen-Huan - and National Wushu Champion Li Hai-Tao. Its overseas distribution rights had already been sold even before the movie began production.
