Chinese historical television series "The Great Revival" shared glory with other international TV dramas at the Second Seoul Drama Awards held on Tuesday. The drama took home awards for best drama series and best cinematography. This continues Chinese dramas' ruling of the best drama series award, following last year's "Qiao Jia Da Yuan" (Qiao's Grand Courtyard).
The 41-episode "Great Revival," based on a well-known story in China, brings the audience back to the ancient Spring and Autumn Period from over two thousand years ago. Besides the Chinese drama, other winners including Japan and South Korea also stood out from the candidates from 32 countries and regions. The young Seoul Drama Awards has built its international fame alongside the well-known International Emmy Awards in the United States, aiming to recognize excellent TV dramas from all over the world.
Top Chinese actor Chen Daoming, who starred in the well-known Infernal Affairs III, once again leads the cast of a period epic. He plays an ancient king who demonstrates the greatest perseverance in striking back on his enemy, played by the equally famous Hu Jun from Lan Yu. With the top actors from the country in the cast and magnificent war scenes, TV drama Wo Xin Chang Dan follows the downfall and resurgence of the King of Yue (Chen Daoming). He loses to the King of Wu (Hu Jun) who captures him as slave after the battle. The defeated king pretends to submit to his new master and does whatever is ordered, but plans for vengeance secretly. Director Hou Yong, the cinematographer for Zhang Yimou's Not One Less and The Road Home and the director of Jasmine Women starring Zhang Ziyi, brings his extensive filmmaking experience into directing TV dramas.
