``Ajumma" is a word that originally indicated any married woman. However, it has gradually gained a new meaning connoting boldness and toughness in public contexts, especially for their husband's and children's sake. Because these features are not typically considered feminine, they are often referred to humorously as ``the third sex.

The new domestic comedy Geum-sun is a movie about a newly married ajumma, Geum-sun (Bae Du-na). More specifically, it is about her overnight journey through an entertainment district in nighttime Seoul, where many people go on drinking sprees, forgetting themselves.

Although the movie clearly depicts the typical toughness of an ajumma through her excursion, its main focus is the cordial affection Geum-sun shows toward her husband and daughter.

Geum-sun is a former star volleyball player. At the age of 20, she happened to marry a huge fan of hers, Jun-tae (Kim Tae-wu). Married at such a young age, she is not familiar with household chores such as cooking and taking care of a baby, and suddenly, all sort of wild things begin on Jun-tae's first day at his workplace.

At the company's welcoming party for new employees, Jun-tae is forced to drink excessively, to the point that he becomes unconscious, and is accidentally left alone in a seedy bar. Finally, after an unidentified caller phones from the bar, Guem-sun leaves home at midnight to rescue her husband, who is being held hostage at the bar.

Though gangsters play an entertaining key role in the movie, director Hyun Nam-sup does not want this to be called another Jo-pok (gangster) movie. For sure, many `jo-poks show up in the movie. But it should be understood as natural, considering the movie's setting, Hyun, who is a former screenwriter, said.

In a sense, the characters seen during Geum-sun's one-night escapade resemble those from the world of Greek mythology in a twisted way, full of contradictory figures. However, while the mythological world is that of many physically hybrid figures, such as minotaurs, ours is contradictory in that poor and haggard-looking people with kind and warm hearts coexist with cold-hearted villains sporting neat and trendy looks.

In the movie, a middle-aged gentleman is eager to have a physical relationship with a high school girl for money, and a greedy storeowner strives not to pay a penny to his Chinese Korean employee. This is the dark side of our real society.

However, at the same time, there are even poorer but warm-hearted people helping each other, sharing warm, humane smiles from deep inside of their hearts. This is the world we live in, and the world worth living for with all the flaws and faults of our society. The nightlife of Seoul reflected in the eyes of the ajumma Geum-sun is painful, but beautiful.
