This time, it's the year 2010 in Yokohama, and something funny is going on. Animals are behaving oddly, and there are sightings of gigantic crab-like creatures throughout the city, but primary school teacher Ichikawa (V-cinema legend Aikawa Sho in the 100th film of his career) has too much on his mind to notice. His wife is stepping out on him, his daughter is a teenage prostitute, and his son is being bullied relentlessly at school.
And on top of it all, Ichikawa is a lousy teacher and knows it. The only thing that gives him comfort is the fond memory of Zebraman, a superhero TV series broadcast in the 1970's and cancelled after seven episodes due to dismal ratings. One night, after Ichikawa has donned his homemade zebra suit, he hears something outside and goes to investigate. Out in the street he encounters a suspicious character, and a fight breaks out. As it turns out, his opponent is an alien, and soon the place is swarming with them, all occupying the bodies of their human hosts in a diabolical bid to take over the world. Will Ichikawa fail as usual, or has the time come for him to stand up and fight?
Billed as Miike's first family film, "Zebraman" is a funny, clever piece with its heart in the right place. With bits for the hardcore Miike fan as well as newbies, "Zebraman" is sure to please just about everybody.
Hit action comedy directed by Takashi Miike ("Audition," "Dead or Alive" series, "Ichi the Killer"). It stars Miike regular Sho Aikawa as Shin-ichi, a loser who tries to escape everyday life by dressing himself as superhero Zebraman. The show got cancelled 34 years ago after only seven episodes, but that doesn't stop him from acting out his fantasy.
Donning his self-made black and white Zebraman suit, Shin-ichi patrols the town pretending to be his beloved hero. Soon, a UFO crashlands and the town is threatened by an evil green crab-alien. Shin-ichi/Zebraman gets more than he bargained for when he realizes he's the only one who stands between the evil (and ugly) alien menace and a happy, monster-free neighborhood community. The film marks Aikawa's 100th silver screen appearance, and he's as great as ever!
