Although The Fatima Buen Story could have been just another glorified biographical film about criminals and their larger than life exploits, director Mario O'Hara does a splendid job of fusing popular action drama with an equally popular source of Filipino entertainment - tabloid sensationalism.
Based on the true-to-life story of Fatima Buen, the film tells the story of a convicted woman felon who falls prey to the perverse corruption of the big city. The film gives us a glimpse of what is inside Fatima Buen as she tries to recover from the tumultous path brought about by her sorry past.
Portrayed by Kris Aquino, the popular and ever-controversial daughter of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, Fatima Buen's life is plagued by a never-ending cycle of love and revenge. She is courted by the lesbian Batman (Janice De Belen),and is given a difficult time by the jail warden. Her luck with men isn't all that cheerful either. Though Baron(John Regala) falls madly in love with her, she is tormented by Kintanar (Zoren Legaspi), the corrupt policeman. Will she be able to escape her wretched fate? Or are her misery and desperation enough to justify one of the most controversial murders of her time?
The Fatima Buen Story is one of the most challenging roles in Kris Aquino's career. Supported by a cast of veteran actors like Janice de Belen (as Batman), Perla Bautista (Fatima's mother), Gina Pareno (the warden), John Regala (Baron) and Zoren Legaspi (Kintanar), many were pleasantly surprised that she was able to carry out a credible performance in this intriguing film.
