CASINO TYCOON
Wong Jing directs Casino Tycoon, the first of two dramatic films detailing the rise of a powerful gambling empire. Andy Lau is Ho Hsin, who arrives in Macau with his friend Nan (Alex Man) in the 1940s. The pair work their way up the social ladder from menial laborers to valued employees of a large, somewhat shady casino. The years are rough and full of ups and downs, but Ho slowly makes his own fortune, and gains and loses love along the way. Sophisticated girlfriend Joey Wang is a casualty of the years, but Ho meets and marries Chingmy Yau, and continues his way to his ultimate goal: wealth, and finally ownership of his own string of casinos. Potent melodrama and an intriguing portrait of Macau are some of the highlights of Casino Tycoon, an entertaining and involving drama set in Macau and Hong Kong from the 1940s to the 1970s. Followed by the sequel Casino Tycoon II, which was also directed by Wong Jing and featured much of the same cast.
CASINO TYCOON 2
The sequel to Casino Tycoon. Andy Lau owns his casino and enjoys peace at home, so nothing much happens until half-way through the movie. Lau's crippled wife Chingmy Yau encourages him to pursue a relationship with comely soap star Cheung Man, but scheming casino workers, a trio of greedy blackjack winners, and hints of incest set Lau's nerves jangling. Leaves it open for a sequel
