Evading Hollywood disaster film conventions,
A drama filled with laughs and tears

A popular vacation spot on the South coast of Korea, Haeundae draws visitors from all over the country. During its peak season, one can find more than a million vacationers packed on its narrow one-mile strip of sand. treads away from the Hollywood template for natural disaster movies. Rather than focusing on one hero that foretells the disaster and saves the day, it tells the story of different characters caught in the drama that catches momentum with the arrival of the giant wave.

The film focuses on the strong and touching drama surrounding the main characters who are connected by interwinding relationships – Man-sik who prepares to propose to his long time girl friend; Yeon-hee whose chance to respond is interrupted by the unexpected disaster; Hwi who meets his 7-year-old daughter for the first time but is unable to tell her that he is her father; Yoo-jin who learns about the importance of family the hard way; Hyung-sik who risks his life to save the one person he loves and Hi-mi who despite the disapproval of her friends, falls in love with Hyung-sik.

CGI by Hollywood and Choongmooro’s top experts:
Visual supervisors, Hans Uhlig and Jang Sung-ho

The film features a giant tsunami which provides the backdrop for the subsequent events and drama. Realizing a sufficiently realistic wave was critical. Director JK Youn met with virtually every CGI team in Korea to discuss the project but reached the conclusion that with the currently technology, it was impossible to achieve the kind of water CGI required for the movie. An American CGI specialist, Polygon Entertainment took on the challenge of producing the tremendous special effects of water scenes and to provide the CGI for the picture.

Headed by Hans Uhlig, the company’s credit includes STAR WARS series, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW and PERFECT STORM. With the experience of more than 15 years working in Hollywood, HAEUNDAE was able to bring a spectacular tsunami to the screen. A birth child of the Hollywood master’s passion and cutting-edge technology, HAEUNDAE’s tsunami will come alive in the eyes of the audience.

Located on the Southeast of the Korean peninsula is the international city of Busan. A popular vacation spot on the East Sea coast, Haeundae draws one milion visitors to its beaches every year. Man-sik, a native of Haeundae, went deep-sea fishing four years before and lost a co-workier in a tsunami; he has never returned. He now leads a simple life running a small sushi shop and is preparing to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Yeon-hee. While these seemingly banal domestic affairs unfold, geologist KIMHwi, an expert on tsunami research, discovers the East Sea is showing signs of activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 tsunami.

Despite his warnings, the Disaster Prevention Agency affirms that Korea is in no harm of being hit. When he discovers a super tsunami starting in Tsushima, Japan is headed stratight for the Korean peninsula, he quicklu heads down to Haeundae. Eventually, KIM gets a call about a deadly oncoming wave, with only ten minutes to spare! While the vacationers and citizens of Busan are enjoying a peaceful, hot summer day, a super-tsunami is headed straight for Haeundae.
