We only get to actually use English for less than a week, even if we study it for over 10 years. Then, why do we have to get criticized and be treated like retards for not speaking good English?[Please Teach Me English~!] is a comedy about a clerk with a limited English vocabulary of sorry and thank you and her fierce battle with English. Anyone who tried to learn English as a second language will understand and sympathize with the film. Director KIM's purpose behind [Please Teach Me English~!] is to show that learning English doesn't have to be a stressful task. It could be an enjoyable comedy. And honestly, this film really is a film one can enjoy and laugh even if he only knows sorry and thank you. Young-ju represents all ESL [Note: ESL- English as Second Language] people who have battled with English for all their lives. Like so many people in the world, Young-ju gave up English early on in her adolescent life, when she realized she has absolutely no talent for this unfathomable language. However, with new burning passion in her heart as her driving force, she dives in again head first and eventually she discovers the true meaning ofcommunication and even conquers her own weakness. [Please Teach Me English~!] is a heartwarming story that will inspire and give hope to so many discouraged English students all around the world with lots of laughter!
[Please Teach Me English~!] is a new kind of comedy with fresh style and never seen before techniques! Corky flash animations are used through out the film to portray Young-ju's offbeat sense of imagination and her bizarre dreams. The scene where Young-ju takes English placement test is shown as a virtual fighter game and her fear and coercion for English is clearly expressed by the raid of Delta Force Commando. Moreover, collage animation technique is used for Young-ju's fantasy voyage under the sea and for the scene where English signboards pop out on the streets. Plus, pop up balloons and comic CG are used to provide explanations for English dialogues. The combination of technology and style has created the most unique and hilarious comedy!
Director KIM Sung-su, the maker of [Beat][City of the Rising Sun] and [The Warriors], is famous for his masculine & stylized action movies. However, this time, he has chosen a comedy flick for his fifth project. At first, his choice of [Please Teach Me English~!] seems a bit off track from his previous films. However, considering humorous character of Hwan-gyu, a boaster from [Beat] and Hong-ki, a punk from [City of the Rising Sun], the genre of comedy doesn't seem too far off the track. In this film, KIM flaunts his hidden talents as a comedy director and creates his own kind of character comedy. If director KIM is the key ingredient in [Please Teach Me English~!], then LEE Na-young is the most flavorful ingredient. Her portrayal of oddly cute and strangely attractive Young-ju is quite perfect. According to LEE, she even changed her own personality to create the most unique and charming character Young-ju.Last but not least, JANG Hyuk's humanistic portrayal of Moon-suk as a likeable 3rd class playboy, in spite of his sliminess and cheesy pick-up lines, completes the well-balanced chemistry of the film. After his collaboration with director KIM, who is known for producing masculine actors, JANG is reborn as more matured and manly actor. The magical combination of KIM, LEE and JANG, together with the production team of [Memories of Murder], [Please Teach Me English~!] is guaranteed to be the next box office breaker film of 2003!

LEE Na-young
LEE Na-young is perfect for the role of Young-ju, a girl who lives in her own corky imagination and illusion 365 days. Director KIM and the writers studied LEE's likings and habits, as well as, her physical movements and adjusted script to bring out the most well matched qualities of both the actress and the character.During filming, LEE was quite delighted by Young-ju?' un-stylish hair style, her nerdy glasses, and even her braces. Moreover, she personally picked out props for Young-ju's room, as if she was decorating her own room and, she even designed outfits for Young-ju.LEE's devotion to her character aroused much compliments from other cast and crew members. JANG(Moon-su) even joked about how he couldn't tell the difference between LEE and her portrayal of Young-ju.
