1. The first court mystery, Shadows in the Palace, presents new historical visuals
The first palace mystery, Shadows in the Palace creates new visuals that have never been seen before in historical dramas. Rather than putting weight on the lavish 'palace' or 'court ladies', the costume and art staff members in charge of the visuals in Shadows in the Palace concentrated on capturing repressive and tense atmosphere onto film.
Art director SHIM Hyun-sup who took part in The President's Barber and King and the Clown took charge of the costumes in Shadows in the Palace. Where other historical films placed emphasis on capturing the lavishness and grand demeanor of the king, queen, and high authorities, the costumes in Shadows in the Palace are practical and functional according to each maids' job and title.
Also director LEE Ha-joon who was in charge of the set for Blood Rain, Low Life, and the open set TV drama Full House presents a new transfiguration of the 'palace'. By creating an imaginary underground area within the palace, the autopsy room, and the library, LEE succeeds in capturing the exclusive and repressed atmosphere of the 'palace'.
Going past the costumes and art aimed at lavishly presenting the king and high authorities, the visuals of Shadows in the Palace focus on expressing the lives of 'court maids' and the mysterious 'palace' thus standing apart from other historical dramas.
2. Creating live, breathing court lady characters
The main characters of the film are mostly 'court ladies' and so the cast consists completely of women. Along with PARK Jin-hee, new generation star actresses like YOON Sae-ah, SUH Young-hee, LIM Jung-eun, and JEON Hae-jin etc. spark an acting battle against glittering experienced actresses like KIM Sungryung, CHOO Gui-jung, and KIM Mi-kyung, etc.
After making her film debut with Whispering Corridors in 1998, PARK Jin-hee has appeared on various TV dramas and film to become one of the top actresses today. YOON Sae-ah has kept very active after her debut in Blood Rain as well as SUH Young-hee, who has appeared in films like Mapado and To Sir, with Love. Actress LIM Jung-eun, who debuted in the movie, Fly High and JEON Hae-jin who starred in the TV series Eun-shil have also been selected to the cast. In order to make real, believable court ladies, the five actresses show solid performances and keep the audience on its toes.
Furthermore, the supporting cast also brings strength and great abetment to Shadows in the Palace. KIM Sung-ryung, who returns to the big screen for the first time in 15 years with Shadows in the Palace and famed actress in theater and musicals, CHOO Gui-jung as well as KIM Mi-kyung who showed a wide spectrum of acting talent as long-time favorite to the palace, all radiate with intense charisma.
Court lady is discovered dead, hanging by the rafters of the palace
Deep within the suffocating stern palace where no one but the king can choose to die, the dead body of Wol-ryung, a court lady, is found dead hanging by the rafters. Chun-ryung, a court nurse brought in to examine the dead body, suggests
the possibility of murder. The supervising court maid and court maid Shim under the royal concubine Hee-bin, however, order her to cover up the death as a suicide while worried about any setbacks in Heebin's son becoming the royal prince.
The mysterious death and the court ladies forced to bury the truth
As Chun-ryung does an autopsy on the corpse, she finds traces of Wol-ryun having given birth. She suspects it to be a murder disguised as a suicide and starts investigating in secret. She suspects Jung-ryul, the one who first discovered the body, and starts questioning her. However, Jung-ryul appears possessed and tormented by a ghost while the other court ladies keep their mouths tightly closed.
On-going murders and a massively growing secret
In the tightly closed palace where even a whisper cannot dare seep out, Chungryung is madly on the search for the murderer. Meanwhile, the supervising court maid plans to hold the annual 'court ladies discipline training’ where court ladies of misconduct are brought together and punished to set right. Her plan is to pick a sacrificial lamb to take the blame for murdering Wol-ryung and close the case. On the night of the discipline training, Chun-ryung discovers an unexpected sword belonging to a court lady and the palace's eerie shadow of death creeps upon her....
What is the truth behind the court lady's murder?
