A convicted rapist, Ikuo is released from prison and goes in pursuit of the woman he raped, Mieko. So obsessed is he with revenge he sees her in every woman he meets. After carrying out vicious attacks on a prostitute and a young girl he finally comes face to face with her. Meiko tells him she wants to escape from Tomimori. To redeem himself in her eyes Ikuo takes her plea to the extreme resulting in inextricable tragedy for them all.
The Dream of Garuda is set in Japan's notorious "soaplands" - areas where young women offer bathing and massage to men, for cash, as a way round the Japanese laws prohibiting prostitution. The story is inspired by folklore surrounding the mythical Hindu god "Garuda", a creature with a gigantic birdlike body, who though regarded as evil, is worshipped as the protector of Buddhism. The Dream of Garuda is filled with highly charged, explicit sex scenes which are at times tender, at others brutal but always very erotic. An absolute treat for soap fetishists the world over.
THE DREAM OF GARUDA is one of the most infamous examples of the pink genres of Japanese cinema. The story of Pink films goes back to that late 60??s and early 70??s when Japanese cinema had fallen on hard times. A recent explosion of worldwide imports had made it hard for the studios to keep cranking out the same product.
Their solution was to invent a genre and they chose to invent one that bordered on the verge of the pornography that they were afraid to dive into. Japanese taboos were still very strict and it was not allowed for a woman to show any hair on her body. The producers solved this problem by shaving the actresses and letting them do full nudity. Despite what you might think, this however isn??t where ??pink?? films got their name. Rather it was the fact that these films were considered less hardcore, and therefore better suited to female audiences who were looking for the romantic films these weren??t.
To understand the story behind Garuda, you need to know two things: The first is that Garuda was a famous Japanese legend where a man turned into a bird upon his death and flew away from his crimes and his guilt, and the second is that the story takes place in the soap lands district of Japan. This is a red light district where women skirt around prostitution laws by giving baths to wealthy gentlemen which provides sexual pleasure without direct contact.
The story begins with Ikuo raping a woman named Mieko. He goes to prison for two years for this crime and when he is released he finds that his life has been changed for good. His friends shun him, he cannot get a job and there is no hope of his ever having a decent life. To complicate matters, he is still obsessed with Mieko. He tries to end his sorrow with a visit to a soap house where he ends up losing control and attacking the woman.
Later, he strolls aimlessly through the streets of Japan, and he comes across Mieko, who has gone through her own version of hell in the past two years. She had become an outcast from normal society because of her rape and she now makes a living by being a bath attendant working for his old friend Tomomori. Tomomori hired Mieko as revenge for what she did to Ikuo, but as the years passed, he decided she earned her keep as his good luck piece. Therefore he is loathe to let Ikuo come anywhere near her.
The rest of the plot revolves around Ikuo??s attempts to get Mieko free from her pimp and return her to a normal life, which would end his suffering by extension. I won??t spoil the ending but I will say it??s not a happy one. We learn early on that the dies have been cast and there is little any of the characters can do to change that.
