Deven, a professor at a small college in India, joyfully learns that he will have the chance to interview his hero, the famous Urdu poet, Nur. When the two men finally meet, Deven is startled to find Nur wallowing in drunkenness and surrounded by losers, including his two nagging wives. Frustrated and depressed with his interviews -- which are filled with nothing but Nur's alcohol-laden ramblings -- Deven returns home.
Based on the Booker Prize-nominated novel by Anita Desai, In Custody, the debut of Ismail Merchant as a director, is a wry, lyrical, comic drama about the contemporary Indian culture, society and domestic life. The central themes are, first, the threatened extinction of the Urdu language?much prized for its beauty sophistication, and its great literary tradition?and, second, the story of two men pursuing their ideals against great odds.
Nur (Shashi Kapoor) is considered the greatest living Urdu poet, and Deven (Om Pori) hopes to rekindle interest in the language by recording Nur reciting the magical verse. But multiple problems block Deven??s path, the greatest these being Nur??s two shrewish wives, his love of drink, and the vastly bloated poet himself. Deven??s monstrous task quickly becomes a central odyssey that follows humorous paths to an unexpected conclusion.
