The Fearless Hyena
The Fearless Hyena marks Chan's directorial debut, who also stars as the young lay-about village boy Lung, who seeks unerring vengeance after his master is brutally murdered. A vicious general (Yam Sai Kun) has been roaming the country, systematically wiping out his grandfather's clan, and when he too is executed, Lung is finally dragged out of lethargy and sets out in hot pursuit of the villainous general.
What could so easily have turned into yet another formulaic revenge piece emerges as an unmissable piece of Hong Kong action comedy, thanks in large part to the playful performances and expertly handled fight choreography. Lung's ineptitude forces him to back into training before he can exact his revenge, prompting many highly amusing, as well as skillfully played out training sequences.
The Fearless Hyena II
Fearless Hyena Part II was made four years later, and is quite a different animal. Jackie Chan was regretting his recent decision to renew his contract with producer Lo Wei, and after filming only a few scenes of this sequel, Chan walked out on the film. Somehow, Lo Wei and director Chan Chuen were able to use the footage already filmed and splice it together with previously unused sequences from Chan's earlier projects. The result is a surprisingly coherent and entertaining yarn, following Lung and his estranged brother, played by Austin Wai, as they are reunited to avenge the death of their mentor at the hands of the evil Heaven and Earth Devils.
While not as accomplished as the original, Fearless Hyena Part II is worth seeing, if only as an opportunity to see numerous sequences of Chan's early work that would doubtless have never seen the light of day otherwise. Together this makes The Fearless Hyena Series an indispensable purchase for Jackie Chan completists everywhere.
