A French couple staying in a rambling country estate in Romania are terrorized by an unknown menace in this claustrophobic, pitch-perfect exercise in horror that quickly shifts into high gear and never quits ratcheting up the tension.
The screenplay for Them was written by Moreau and Palud. The movie stars Olivia Bonamy as Clementine and Michael Cohen as Lucas.
"Lucas and Clementine, a thirtysomething couple, are expats in Romania. They live in an isolated house in the suburbs of Bucharest. Clementine, a French teacher, and Lucas, a novelist, live in peaceful happiness. However, one evening in their house, everything is turned upside down. Rain is beating outside. The telephone keeps ringing... distant voices at the end of the line... incomprehensible. The couple are not alone. The nightmare begins. THEY are there...."
At the beginning, we can wonder if it is about sci-fi/horror or something that can really happen to you. Just after the first scene. Lucas and Clementine living peacefully. Then, one night, they first begin to hear strange noise at the phone, and then some events will happen. They are not alone .. because "THEY" are here ...
It's not a slasher movie because they are not 5 or more in the house to be killed by a serial killer ... it's between Sci-fi and Horror. Sounds and noises are good enough to have a very dark atmosphere and ambient, as well as the picture in itself.
When you reach the end, it's pretty well done. and the movie takes place in Romania, so it's more creepy than a location like France, for example.
