In The Trilogy, three very different, but parallel stories unfold. A man escapes from prison and tries to reconnect with old friends and settle scores with old enemies. A husband and wife fall prey to petty jealousies and suspicions. A policeman juggles pressures at work with the demands of his drug-addicted wife. As characters wander in and out of the three films, we watch them transform from leading men or women in their own stories to bit players in those of their acquaintances and friends. In a cinematic gamble without precedent, three feature-length tales are told in three disparate genres, providing not so much the same action from different perspectives as different pieces and consequences of the combined, concurrent actions of all three.
ON THE RUN (CAVALE)
Belgium/France, 2002, 117 min.
The first installment focuses its noir-thriller lens on Bruno, an extreme-left revolutionary who has escaped from prison and is trying to pick up where he left off. Enlisting the help of his former accomplice, Jeanne, now a teacher, wife, and mother, Bruno must avoid being captured by Pascal, a downtrodden cop looking to regain his credibility, while simultaneously helping his drug-addicted wife, Agnes, score morphine. But Bruno finds Agnes first and trades her drugs for a hideout: her friend Cecile??s mountain chalet.
AN AMAZING COUPLE (UN COUPLE EPATANT)
Belgium/France, 2002, 100 min.
For the second installment, Belvaux switches from thriller to lighthearted romantic comedy. Cecile is a teacher still madly in love with her husband Alain, a hypochondriac who is convinced that a routine operation will take his life. In an attempt to avoid alarming his wife, he tells her a series of white lies, and she mistakes his secrecy for an affair. Cecile hires Pascal, a cop who??s married to her friend Agnes, to track her increasingly paranoid husband.
AFTER LIFE (APRES LA VIE)
Belgium/France, 2002, 124 min.
The final installment in Belvaux??s masterful trilogy is a melodrama that follows Pascal, a cop who uses his professional connections to score morphine for his drug-addicted wife, Agnes. When his sources blackmail him, saying he??ll get no more drugs until he delivers escaped convict, Bruno, Pascal is faced with a moral dilemma. When his wife??s friend, Cecile, offers the perfect distraction?trailing her neurotic husband?he falls in love with her. With Pascal focused on Bruno and Cecile, a desperate Agnes is forced to turn to Bruno for a fix.
