Francois Ozon was born in 1967 in Paris. With his master's degree in Cinema (Paris I), he entered the French famous school of cinema La FEMIS in the diector section in 1990. Since then, he has been shooting many movies in super-8, video, 16mm and 35mm. Many of his short movies have been in competition in various international festivals.

This Collector's Boxset include s four of his critically acclaimed films and box-office successes STCOM, UNDER THE SAND, 8 WOMEN, and SWIMMING POOL.

Sitcom

Francois Ozon's debut feature film is a hyperbolic piece of absurdist satire. A merciless skewering of the bourgeoisie, the ironically titled Sitcom helped cement the French director's reputation as one of the most provocative artists working in cinema today. Set almost entirely in the tony home of an upper middle-class family, the movie is essentially a string of outrageous vignettes. The surface serenity of family life is shattered by the arrival of a pet mouse, which sets off unusual vibes in the household. One by one, taboos are broken: from incest to bestiality, the movie gives free rein to Ozon's iconoclastic urges. While this stylized movie is clearly the product of an assured talent, it fails to sustain interest during its 79-minute running time. Ozon's demolition of the suburbs is certainly not short on zeal, but as a critique of modern life and bourgeois vacuity, it offers little that is new. Unabashedly heartless, the movie's succession of transgressions becomes numbing fast. By the end, Sitcom reveals itself to be as shallow and inane as the people it ridicules.

Under The Sand (Original: Sous le Sable)

Can love vanish without a trace? Named one of People Magazine's Most Beautiful People, Charlotte Rampling (The Night Porter, The Verdict) gives one of her most acclaimed performances in Francois Ozon's (Criminal Lovers, Water Drops on Burning Rocks) mesmerizing tale of loss and grief, Under the Sand.

For many years, Marie (Rampling) and Jean (Bruno Cremer) have happily spent their vacations together at their country house. One day at the beach, Marie naps in the sand while Jean goes for a swim. When she awakens, he is gone. Did he drown? Did he run off? Distraught, Marie notifies the authorities but after an extensive search, no body is found.

Tenaciously and disquietingly, Marie keeps the memory of her husband alive, often speaking of him as if he never disappeared. She strikes up a tentative relationship with Vincent (Jacques Nolot), but is unable to make any real commitment. Ultimately she must grapple with her life alone while coping with her erotic stirrings and fantasy life.

8 Women (aka: 8 Femmes)

At an isolated mansion in the snowy countryside of 1950s France, a family is gathered for the holiday season, but there will be no celebration - their beloved patriarch has been murdered! The killer can only be one of the eight women closest to the man of the house. Was it his powerful wife, his spinster sister-in-law, his miserly mother-in-law? Maybe the insolent chambermaid or the loyal housekeeper? Could it possibly have been one of his two daughters? A surprise visit from the victim's chic sister sends the household into a tizzy, encouraging hysterics, exacerbating rivalries and encompassing musical interludes. Comic situations arise with the revelations of dark family secrets. Seduction dances with betrayal. The mystery of the female psyche is revealed. Eight women. Each is a suspect, each has a motive, each has a secret. One of them is guilty.

Swimming Pool

Francois Ozon's psychological thriller Swimming Pool stars Charlotte Rampling as a mystery writer. When Sarah (Rampling) is offered the use of her publisher's vacation home, she accepts the offer. The conservative, repressed Sarah clashes with the house's other inhabitant, Julie (Ludivine Sagnier), the uninhibited daughter of the publisher. Julie's promiscuous sex life intrigues Sarah and starts to lead to the thawing of the emotional deep-freeze between the two. The death of one of Julie's nightly assignations complicates their lives. Swimming Pool was screened in competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. sw
